PuterPlane: Running Server

Running Server

  • Kangaroo-sized
    • But moves like an ostrich
  • Head is tablet
    • Weapon; display one random file from its hard drive:
      1. PAGEFILE.SYS
        • Attacker is confused for one round
        • But reveals information about running processes (+3 bonus against this Running Server)
      2. TWAIN.DLL
        • Save vs. Scan. If fail, Running Server has a visual copy of attacker and may print out clones that will defend it
      3. C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\WINGDING.TTF
        •  Save vs. Tinfoil Hat (or Deciphering), or stand useless for 2 rounds trying to make sense of the symbols
  • Tail is power chord
    • Must recharge once per day for at least 2 hours
      • Running Servers that go without power start losing information at the rate of 1 file/hour
      • Information hungry, will hunt and devour interesting things if re-powered and memory was lost
  • Chicken legs
  • Type of pack animal
    • Domesticated by Binary Herders in server farms

PuterPlane (an extremely tiny setting): STACKSPACE

STACKSPACE
  • STACKSPACE is the area between the planets (like normal space)
  • It's also kind of an entity that likes to keep track of whoever floats around in it
  • You may always enter STACKSPACE, but to leave either...
    • You must be the last being who entered
    • Or everyone who entered before you must first leave, in proper order
  • The CORRECT ORDER OF THINGS is a large list readable by all beings in STACKSPACE
    • It can be downloaded through the waves at 5918.43 MHz
    • Lists beings (and their whereabouts) that need to leave before you
      • Since it gives away locations, it's a popular tool to use by bounty hunters
  • OVERFLOWING STACKSPACE occurs when too many beings enter STACKSPACE, and it can't keep track of them all
    • The OVERFLOW causes ALL beings to be flushed onto any random planet in the being's proximity, thus emptying STACKSPACE completely
    • Rumour has it that it's possible to enter STACKSPACE during the small window of an OVERFLOW
      • You still take up space, but you may leave at any time
      • Leaving in this way (improperly, out-of-order) causes noticeable fragmentation ("holes") of the void
        • When fragmentation is too high, the COLLECTOR will arrive and:
          1. Lock down STACKSPACE (unable to enter or leave)
          2. Spend time hunting down beings currently in STACKSPACE, and put them in a neat line
          3. When the COLLECTOR feels like the job is done, it will unlock STACKSPACE and flush the neat line onto the nearest planet/sun
  • Beings who die in STACKSPACE are still counted for; they too must "leave"
    • A few blaster shots most likely takes care of this

Propeller Penny

Propeller Penny
Uncommon, Automaton, Human-sized

The propeller activates when the Penny crosses a analogue leyline; it will take 1 round to start up and reach full speed, run at full speed for 1d6 rounds, and then shut down for 1 round.

All Pennys are faceless, but have the ability to form emotions using the magnetic emojii-ability (MAGEMO): it may smear mud (or blood) on its face, and then rearrange the particles into face-like expressions. It's unclear if it's aware of what it conveys.

Backtracking the steps of a Penny takes you to a tall, almost abandoned apartment complex, overgrown with (now-dead) CAT87-cables. In one of the apartments on the top floor, the biological dead (but technically still functioning) body of the great video game-modder D-M1C3 (from before the last pseudo-nuke, 530 years ago) can be found in a chair. She's hooked up to an old Amstrad CPC, where a 3D-wireframe of the Propeller Penny is spinning in toxic green (the background is a pause screen of a flight simulator).

Several 3D-printers can be found scattered around the apartment, each one printing one piece of a Penny. The printers are placed so that when the pieces are printed, they click together naturally - and the Penny gets up and walks away.

On a shelf on the left wall, a worn and very old box of the computer game CHUCK YEAGER'S ADVANCED FLIGHT SIMULATOR can be found. It will most likely crumble when touched.

Penny's are drawn to clear hierarchies and loud noises. They never stop.

PuterPlane (an extremely tiny setting): landmarks: MATTERHERZ

MATTERHERZ

  • Looks like mountains, but aren't
  • Actual a short sound sample (22 KHz, 8 bit, mono) on pause
  • Each Matterherz pseudo-mountain belongs to one specific being on the PuterPlane, be it person, animal or AI. Upon death, the sound sample will resume play, and thus change the landscape
    • The sample is potentially loud; been known to knock people on their arse, and even make certain bots skip a cycle

PuterPlane (an extremely tiny setting): weapons and doodads (part 0x01)

Cathode-Ray Gun

  • Small Beam weapon
    • Smallest amount of damage
    • Concentrated attacks may inflict X-ray radiation on the target
    • Shots may be scattered when magnetic fields are present, making it an unreliable weapon
  • Often built from scrap
    • The cathode-ray part can be salvaged from Monitorhead monsters such as ABC 80-WAYS2DIE and Commodoreberus
    • Needs a power source
      • Pedal-powered generators are popular and easy to construct

Mutated capacitors

  • Lick them to release their energy (save vs. shock; fail = heart stops, success = table below)
    1. Become illuminated for 1d6 hours (known as a Hartley curse)
    2. Index finger is charged; stored energy will be released upon first touch (roll on this table again, affects touched target)
    3. Your ears goes into hyper-signal-filtering the next 1d6 hours, making any type of spoken language ("noise") clear and understandable to you (not the exact words, but the general meaning)
    4. Reverse hyper-signal-filtering: speak only pink noise for the next 1d6 hours. Speaking in this mode will most likely attract KORG WORGS
    5. Flatten out any sudden change in violence: damage done to/by you cannot differ more than 1 point from the previous damage inflicted (unless this is the first damage done). E.g., if the previous hit inflicted 5 points of damage, and the next hit would do 2, it will instead do 4, and so on.
    6. You can summon a very weak gØlem by taking two equally sized metal plates, making them almost touch, and then separate them slowly. The space between them will open a portal, summoning the gØlem known as DIE!!lectric.

PuterScGUID

Each PuterScGUID is uniquely identified by a sequence consisting of 32 hexadecimal digits, separated into five groups (eg. 21EC2020-3AEA-4069-A2DD-08002B30309D).

If you happen to come across such a sequence, you can with very easy means always know:

  • ...its exact location
  • ...what it's currently doing
  • ...how to contact it (using the ScGUID's TMQS1.1 - Telepathic Message Queuing System version 1.1)

Most ScGUID:s live in the binary seas, are poisonous and worship the never seen bot-entity known only as I, Unknown (whom they worship because even though its sequence is well known - 00000000-0000-0000-C000-000000000046 - no-one has ever been able to locate or contact it, something the ScGUID:s would love to know how it does) .

PuterUmberWasp

Yeah so what's so old and computery about this UmberWasp, you wonder. Well it's tiny as hell and burrows into MonitorHeads and other hardwares and introduces BUGS.

It loves nibbling on electronic impulses, and inverting logical patterns (it hates AND-gates).

Puterpadpion

Some species comes with a turbo button. If met, you should run twice as fast.

PuterBrute +HEARTz

No obvious 80s puter reference in the pic? No monitorhead? No diskdriver for a mouth? Well maybe his brain is an Atari ST, and the MIDI-controller is connected to the heart, beating in steady 119 BPM.

PuterPlane (an extremely tiny setting): monsters

ABC 80-WAYS2DIE
  • Djinn-ish
  • The tornado-like body is actually smoke coming from overheated circuits inside its monitorhead.
    • It can only maintain this form for 30 mins before it shuts down and needs to cool for 10 mins
    • When in cooling mode it looks like an ordinary puter, turned off
    • The overheated smoke-body-mode is achieved by running this small program:

      10 GOSUB 20
      20 GOSUB 10

Keyed Cobra
  • Snake-ish
  • It attacks with its keyboardhead, trying to punch in command sequences to curse its subject
    • Each successful hit will leave a mark on the targets forehead in the shape of a letter (key)
    • When the last letter in the command sequence is typed into the targets forehead, the curse activates
    • Some command sequence examples and their effects:

      FORMAT C: (memory loss)
      CHCP 864 (target changes language)

Tandy Tentacles
  • Octupus/blob-ish
  • Oracle
    • Those brave enough may ask a question by typing it in reverse on its keyboard
      • The reversed typing is due to the fact that the Tandy Tentacle reads from the other side of screen, much like a mirror
  • Lives on cowhide

Commodoreberus
  • Hound-ish
  • Gatekeepers
  • Each monitorhead runs its own program, that helps the creature overall
    • One head runs the past events-program (e.g. remembering stuff)
    • One head runs the planner (e.g. how to move its legs, shortest route to places, avoiding danger, etc.)
    • One head runs the monitoring program (e.g. are we hungry? are we overheating? are we being attacked? are we hurting?)
  • The three monitorheads shares the same processor (found in its body), so each head only gets 1/3 of the processing power
    • Cutting off/terminating a head does not make two new ones grow out, but it will give the remaining ones more processing power (for example: from 1/3 to 1/2)
